Unless you have been under a rock these last few years you will have heard about nurses making TikTok videos. There are complication videos all around the internet showing nurses dancing in tandem, twerking, and acting silly on video.
Some of the Nurse TikTok videos are group videos where nurses have spent time choreographing their dances, while other TikTok videos feature only a single nurse.
Many of these nurse TikTok videos are shot in the hospital. Some nurses make their TikTok videos at home, while they are changing into Scrubs for dance challenges for instance. However, the majority of TikTok videos are made in the hospital by nurses who are working and on duty.

Should Nurses Post on Social Media?
A larger question that should be asked is if it’s appropriate for nurses to film videos in the hospital. Most of the criticism about nurses posting TikTok videos online is tired to their filming videos in the hospital.
There are serious concerns about patient safety and also patient privacy. While some nurses have filmed only themselves dancing in rooms, other nurses have made TikTok videos where patients or patient families are seen in the background.

The question was if it was professional for nurses to film TikTok videos while they are at work.
The first thing to understand is that nurses are not in a sense professionals. They are not employees who work in a office setting or another type of professional atmosphere. Nurses work in hospitals or in clinics or other medical facilities. These areas are not the calm and professional areas where corporate employees work.
Nurses do not wear professional business attire, they wear scrubs and they have to deal with patients who often are sick, vomiting, bleeding, or in need of assistance. Because of this, the attitude of most nurses is much different than someone who works in an office environment.
Nurses can behave in ways that most people do not consider professional because of their environment.
Most people would be terminated if they were dancing on the job and filming it for TikTok. That sort of behavior is not even tolerated in fast food restaurants.
However, nursing in general has a much more relaxed atmosphere. Hospitals understand that the caliber of nurses has changed in the last few years, as well as the demand for nurses. So, that along with powerful nursing unions, have allowed for nurses to exert power over their workplace.
Nurses also behave in this way in order to blow off steam. The workplace environment for nurses is not a professional one, so even if a nurse were to want to behave in a professional manner it would not be reciprocated by other nurses.
The simple act of filming a dance routine in the hospital while people are sick and other people are working is unprofessional.
The more egregious TikToks are the ones where the nurses are showcasing patients, which is in direct violation of hospital code. These TikToks come under scrunity on social media and the nurses tend to quickly pull them off. They are not aware of how the rest of the world views them and live within a nurse bubble where they speak about patients and other nurses in a very frank manner.

Are There Any Repercussions For Nurses Who Make TikTok Videos?
Most of the time there are very few reprecutions when a nurse makes a TikTok video. The only time there might be backlask against a nurse who posts a TikTok video is if they post a video which breaks patient confidentiality. And even then it’s not that common for a nurse to get into trouble.
There are plenty of people who choose nursing for the wrong reasons. These reasons include:

Unfortunately, this atmosphere allows for an environment where nurses do things that would otherwise be considered unprofessional. So, a hospital might have a group of nurses spend their time creating dance videos and other things that are taking time away from critical patients or even regular patients.
In some cases, nurses who have posted crude videos of their patients have been reprimanded, but for the most part it’s not a big issue within nursing.
As many nurses will tell you, if you have a pulse and a nursing license you will get hired on the spot at most hospitals.
This sort of imbalance creates a workplace atmosphere where people are not incentivized to act professional.
