Getting a Job in New York Social Work-- Does The School Matter?
Diploma mills might look like an easy shortcut, but they can
seriously backfire on your resume. Employers often check where your degree
comes from, and if it’s not from an accredited school, that’s a huge red flag.
In many cases, it can cost you the job instantly—or even get you fired later if
it’s discovered.
It also comes down to trust. Listing a fake or low-quality
degree makes it seem like you’re trying to cut corners, and that can make
employers question your honesty. Once that trust is gone, it’s hard to get it
back.
On top of that, diploma mills don’t actually teach you much,
so you may struggle to keep up in a real work environment.
In the end, it’s just not worth it. You’re better off building real skills or earning a legitimate credential that actually helps your career.
Here's a breakdown of the main schools in NYC that offer degrees, and how they are ranked.
Tier 1 Schools in NYC
- Fordham, Columbia, NYU and CUNY – Hunter
These are the best schools in NYC. They are all real colleges, competitive. They don't have high acceptance rates. They look good on a resume.
Tier 2 Schools
Pace, CUNY Brooklyn and Lehman
These schools are still competitive, and employers know that they are real schools that have a real curriculum.
Tier 3 - Bottom Rank
College of New Rochelle, Monroe, Berkely and Monroe College.
These schools are not competitive and employers know that anyone who goes to these schools is not as academically gifted or as serious as someone who goes to a Tier 1 or 2 school.
